The memory of St Agnes in Rome is mainly located around two different spaces: in the Domitian stadium, on whose perimeter Piazza Navona was subsequently built, where stands the church of Sant'Agnese in Agone; and in the catacombs of via Nomentana, where another church was built, Sant'Agnese Fuori le Mura. Here in 1605 Agnes' body was found by Cardinal Paolo Sfondrati; while fifty years later, Sant'Agnese in Agone was restored by the Pope Innocenzo X Pamphili and his family, thanks to the work of the architects Borromini, del Grande, Baratta and De Rossi. Thus the rebirth of Agnes' cult in the early modern age was realized through the new attention paid to her relics and to the places of her memory, and was organized around old and new ceremonies. Moreover, a symbolic thread seems to bind Agnes to other saints: Emerenziana, Costanza, Attica and Artemia, but also Cecilia and Francesca Romana.

Abstract
Moreover, a symbolic thread seems to bind Agnes to other saints: Emerenziana, Costanza, Attica and Artemia, but also Cecilia and Francesca Romana.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
